Adventistische Schriften über: "Spiritual consequences of remaining in a sinful city"

Answer

Remaining in a sinful environment leads to a gradual dulling of the conscience, as one becomes familiar with sin through the constant viewing of vice and crime. Moral judgment is weakened until that which was once detested is felt as pleasant and the ability to distinguish between good and evil is lost. Moreover, there is the danger of losing spiritual aspirations and severing the connection to God due to evil societal influences and the pull of worldly pleasures.

The consequences of evil society and moral corruption

»Lot's staying in Zoar was only of short duration. There the same lawlessness as in Sodom prevailed, and he feared staying so that the city would not be destroyed. ... But the curse of Sodom followed him even here. The sinful behavior of his daughters was the result of the evil associations at that debauched place. His moral corruption was so intertwined with their character that they could no longer distinguish between good and evil.«

Habituation to sin through constant observation

»We are changed by looking. By allowing impure thoughts, a person can train his mind so that the sin he once detested becomes pleasant to him. ... One hears and reads so much about degrading crimes that the once tender conscience, which would have recoiled in horror from such scenes, becomes hardened, and one turns to these things with greedy interest.«

Loss of spiritual abilities in the cities

»Youth are swept up by the popular current. ... They are led from one form of debauchery to another until they lose both the desire and the ability for a useful life. Their religious aspirations are cooled; their spiritual life is darkened. All the higher abilities of the soul, everything that connects a person with the spiritual world, is degraded.«

Numbing of moral sensitivity

»The same sins of gluttony and drunkenness numbed the moral sensitivity of the inhabitants of Sodom, so that crimes seemed to be the pleasure of the men and women of that godless city. ... The moral forces are weakened so that sin no longer appears sinful. Crimes are ignored, and low passions dominate the mind until general corruption eradicates good principles and impulses.«

The danger of becoming participants in injustice

»That their love for God grows cold because injustice prevails shows that they are, in a sense, participants in that injustice; otherwise it would not affect their love for God and their zeal for His cause. ... Many professing Christians are so numbed by the same practice that their moral sensibilities can no longer be awakened to understand that it is sin.«

Why I built EGW Vision

Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.

EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.

My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
