Ellen Gould White

What does Ellen White write about...

Ellen Gould White über: "Should we only “study” the Bible, but not simply “read” it? And what exactly does that mean, please?"

Answer

No, “studying” does not mean that you should not read the Bible at all: reading is part of it, but hasty or superficial reading often does not lead to a deep understanding. “Studying” means thoughtfully asking about the meaning and context of a passage, reflecting on it, and seeking God’s help to understand it. Reading and careful investigation complement each other.

Why careful study is more beneficial than hurried reading

»Little benefit is gained from a hurried reading of the Scriptures. One may read through the whole Bible and yet fail to see its beauty or grasp the depth of its meaning. A passage studied until its meaning is clear to the mind and its connection with the plan of salvation is recognized is more valuable than reading many chapters without a definite purpose and clear instruction.«

Studying means grasping the meaning—not mechanically repeating words

»If we read the Scriptures without interest, we cannot truly understand the truths contained in them. […] It is not merely a matter of mechanically repeating the words while the mind fails to grasp their meaning, but of penetrating to the heart of the matter and becoming familiar with what the lesson brings out.«

In practice: thoughtfully consider a verse and ask for understanding

»The mere reading of the Word will not accomplish the result intended by Heaven; it must be studied and cherished in the heart. […] We should diligently study the Bible and ask God for the help of the Holy Spirit, that we may understand His Word. We should take one verse and concentrate on grasping the thought God has placed in that verse. We should reflect on that thought until it becomes our own and we know “what the Lord says.”«

Reading should come from love and be combined with searching

»I will not command you to read the Bible—I never will. I want you to read the Bible because you love it, not because you are urged to do so; otherwise it would be an unpleasant duty. […] By reading and searching the Scriptures, you will see the chain of truth and discover new beauties in the Word of God.«

Why I built EGW Vision

Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.

EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.

My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
