Ellen White describes in her book Early Writings (Early Writings), that in the year 1847 during a Sabbath meeting in Topsham, Maine, she was carried in a vision by an angel from the earth into the Holy City (heaven). There she saw the heavenly temple, the Most Holy Place and the Ark of the Covenant with the Ten Commandments.

»The Lord gave me the following vision in 1847, while the brethren were gathered on the Sabbath in Topsham, Maine. We sensed an unusual spirit of prayer. And as we prayed, the Holy Spirit fell upon us. We were very happy. Soon I was taken away from earthly things and wrapped in a vision of God's glory. I saw an angel swiftly fly toward me. He quickly carried me from the earth into the Holy City. In the city I saw a temple, which I entered. I went through a door before I came to the first curtain. This curtain was lifted, and I entered the Holy.«
