What does EGW write about...
Adventistische Schriften über: "Satan has tried to make believers into doubters."
Answer
Satan pursues a deliberate plan to shake the believers' trust in God and His Word by sowing doubt about central points of faith and the testimonies. He often uses difficult life circumstances or incomprehensible Bible passages to provoke mistrust of God's love and power. Once these doubts gain a foothold, the Scriptures say they lead to a progressive alienation that can end in open rebellion and the loss of salvation.
Satan's Strategy of Seduction to Unbelief
It is Satan's plan to weaken the faith of God's people in the testimonies. This is followed by skepticism regarding the vital points of our faith, the pillars of our position, then doubt of the Holy Scripture and finally a downward march into ruin. When the testimonies once believed are doubted and abandoned, Satan knows that the deceived will not remain here; and he doubles his efforts until he drives them into open rebellion, which becomes incurable and ends in destruction.
Satan rejoices when he can lead God's children into unbelief and despair. He delights to see us distrust God and doubt His willingness and power to save us. ... It is Satan's work to portray the Lord as lacking compassion and mercy. He misrepresents the truth about Him.
Some have given the tempter a willing ear and expressed their unbelief, wounding the matter. ... He has suggested doubt to their spirit, and instead of rejecting it outright, they have reasoned with the arch‑deceiver and listened to his arguments as if they were enchanted by the ancient serpent. Some passages that were not fully understandable to their own spirit were enough to shake the entire edifice of truth.
Satan stands at the head of the great army of doubters, and he works with all his might to lure souls into his ranks. It becomes modern to doubt. There is a large class that views God's word with distrust... Those who are not willing to obey his demands strive to overthrow his authority.
It is Satan's firm goal to cut off every communication between God and His people so that he can apply his deceitful schemes without a voice warning them of the danger. If he can cause people to distrust the messenger or to ascribe no holiness to the message, he knows they will not feel obligated to heed God's Word.
Satan watches for his opportunity to bring about circumstances that tend to arouse unbelief, hoping to lead us to doubt God. We cannot afford to entertain even a single thought of unbelief. When we are tempted to look to the dark side, let us open the windows of the soul heavenward.
