Adventistische Schriften über: "Romans 1 and the question of whether people can be saved who have never heard of Jesus"

Answer

Romans 1 states that people who do not know God are still without excuse, because God has revealed Himself to them through creation. As the letter to the Romans continues, it becomes clear that God judges impartially and judges people according to the measure of light that has been given to them. Even people from the Gentile nations who did not directly know the written word or the name of Jesus bear the testimony of the law in their hearts and are justly judged through Christ according to their conscience and their deeds.

God's impartial judgment and the law in the hearts of the Gentiles

»The first chapter of Romans can be briefly summarized as presenting the condition of those who do not know God, and the way they have lost their knowledge, together with the fact that they are completely without excuse. Then, just when we are ready to raise our hands in horror over their wickedness and pronounce severe condemnation upon them, the apostle turns to us and shuts our mouths with the cutting words: "Therefore you are unaccountable, O man, whoever you are, who you judge; for in the very thing you judge the other, you condemn yourself; for you, who judge, do the same." And so the second chapter continues to show that all will be subject to God’s righteous judgment, "for there is no partiality before God." ... "For if the Gentiles, who do not have the law, nevertheless by nature do what the law requires, they are, although they do not have the law, a law unto themselves; they demonstrate that the work of the law is written on their hearts, as their conscience bears witness and their thoughts accuse or excuse one another"; on the day when God will judge the hidden things of people through Jesus Christ according to my gospel.«

Judgment according to the received light and privileges

»We have much to answer for when we consider our superior privileges and know that we must be judged according to the light and privileges that the Lord has granted us. ... and if the mighty works and the insight and the grace that have been revealed to this people were made known to the nations in darkness, we do not know how far they might now be ahead of this people. We cannot measure how much more tolerable it will be for them on the day of judgment than for those on whom the clear light of truth has shone...«
