The Ottoman Empire plays a central role in Adventist prophetic interpretation, especially in connection with the trumpets from Revelation 9. Josiah Litch calculated, based on the so‑called year‑day principle, that the Ottoman dominance would end after exactly 391 years and 15 days on August 11, 1840. The fulfillment of the sixth trumpet
In 1840 another remarkable fulfillment of prophecy aroused widespread interest. Two years earlier Josiah Litch [...] published an interpretation in which he predicted the fall of the Ottoman Empire and gave not only the year but the exact day on which it would occur. According to this interpretation [...] the Turkish government would relinquish its independence on the eleventh day of August 1840.
Calculation of the prophetic periods
The time allotted for its continuance was one day, that is a prophetic day or a year; a month or 30 days, 30 years; a year or 360 days, 360 years; and an hour, a 24th part of a prophetic day or 15 days; which together amounted to 391 years and 15 days. It ended on August 11, 1840; AND AT THAT TIME THE OTTOMAN DOMINION ACTUALLY CEASED!

At the precisely appointed moment the Turkey, through its envoys, accepted the protection of the allied powers of Europe and thus placed itself under the control of Christian nations. The event fulfilled the prediction exactly. When this became known, crowds were convinced of the correctness of the principles of prophetic interpretation applied by Miller and his companions.
Significance for the Advent message
When the event confirmed the truthfulness of this calculation, the way was prepared for the Advent message to proceed with powerful force. The prophecies were not only deciphered, but a demonstration of the truthfulness of the method of calculating prophetic times was given to the world in God's providence.
