Ellen Gould White über: "Relationship to weapons"

Answer

The scriptures suggest that believers should not take part in violent conflicts, as this contradicts the principles of their faith. In the history of the Advent movement, a stance of conscientious objection (non‑combatants) was adopted, which rejects service with weapons but allows alternative services such as work in hospitals. This position is based on respect for God’s commandments and the biblical orientation toward the existing civil authorities.

Rejection of participation in war

»Sabbath keepers can no longer expect this and should under no circumstances involve themselves in this terrible war. They have nothing to hope for. The devastating power of God is on the earth to tear apart and destroy; the inhabitants of the earth are consecrated to the sword, to hunger, and to pestilence.«

Status as conscientious objector and non‑combatant

»Immediate steps were taken to secure for the young men of the Seventh‑day Adventists the privileges granted to members of religious communities that refused to bear arms on conscientious grounds – namely to be assigned to non‑combatant service in hospital work or in the care of released prisoners. ... The experiences of the Seventh‑day Adventists in connection with the Civil War led them to take steps that secured them a recognized status as non‑combatants, which simultaneously enabled them to follow the biblical instructions regarding their relationship to the “existing authorities” that are “ordained by God”.«

Why I built EGW Vision

Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.

EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.

My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
