Adventistische Schriften über: "Read Colossians 1:19–20. What is this reconciliation that takes place through the cross, and how extensive is it?"
Answer
The reconciliation effected by the cross is the restoration of the relationship between God and humanity that was broken by the fall. This reconciliation is so extensive that it concerns the entire universe and brings peace between "things on earth" and "things in heaven." Through Christ’s sacrifice, man is not only cleansed of guilt but also restored to the status Adam held before sin.
The Scope of Reconciliation Through the Cross
“And through him to reconcile all things to himself, whether on earth or in heaven.” What could be meant by the words “reconcile the things in heaven”? Are there things there that need reconciliation? The reconciliation of the things on earth is easy to understand; for here a rebellion takes place, from whose ranks people are to be regained and reconciled with Him through God’s grace. Such a condition does not exist in heaven... and yet there may be reconciliation to be carried out there.
In the gracious blessing that our heavenly Father has bestowed upon us, we can recognize countless evidence of a love that is infinite... We see amid the throne One who bears on his hands, feet, and side the marks of suffering he endured, to reconcile man with God and God with man. The incomparable mercy reveals to us a Father... who receives us to Himself through the merits of His Son.
Christ’s atoning act on the cross not only made our reconciliation with God possible, but also enabled every sinner who accepts the offer to be restored to Adam’s glorious state before his fall.
From the cross at Golgotha the Son of God proclaimed that the work of redemption was completed. This work was to affect the entire creation, and although ungodly people did not understand the meaning of the mystical words “It is finished,” the whole of nature responded to it.
The connection between heaven and earth, between God and man, had been destroyed by Adam’s fall; but through Christ man could again have fellowship with God. ... Thus the abyss that sin had torn was bridged by the Redeemer of the world.
