Adventistische Schriften über: "Read Colossians 1:18. What connection exists between the concept of Christ as Head and as Beginning?"
Answer
The terms “Head” and “Beginning” are closely linked, because the Greek word arche denotes both the start and a leading position or a chief. Christ is described as the “Beginning” in which the entire creation has its origin, and he is also the Alpha and Omega, the source of all life. As the Head of the universe and the church, he stands at the top and possesses supreme authority, making him Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler in one person.
The Significance of Arche as Head and Origin
The word that is translated as “Beginning” is arche and also means “Head” or “Chief”. [...] The statement that He is the Beginning or the Head of God’s creation means that in Him the creation had its beginning; that He, as He himself says, is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the First and the Last. He is the source from which all things originate.
Christ as the Originator of Creation
The meaning of the word would rather suggest the idea of “chief authority” and present Him not as the “Beginning”, but as the initiator of God’s creation... No work of creation was accomplished until Christ entered the plan as an active agent; for all this work was effected through Him.
Foremost and Sovereignty over the Universe
Regarding existence, He was thus before them all. And then creation began, of which He was the “Beginning”. [...] Since they owe their existence to Him, they depend on Him to be constantly preserved. [...] As He stands at the pinnacle of the universe and all things within it, as Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of all, what flight of imagination could grasp the measure of His glory and power?
The Head of the Church and Redemption
And He is the Head of the body, the church; He, who is the Beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He may have preeminence in all things. For it pleased the Father that the whole fullness dwell in Him.
