Ellen G. White explains that God is currently not working to bring many souls into the truth because many church members have either never been converted or have fallen away from the faith. The lacking spiritual condition and the selfishness of believers prevent a greater work of God; if the hearts were cleansed, according to their statements twenty souls could be won where today only one is saved. Moreover, worldly ballast in the believers' hearts hinders the way to the cross and blocks the influence of the Holy Spirit.
Unprepared church members and the obstacle for new souls
»The Lord is not now working to bring many souls into the truth because of the church members who have never been converted, and those who were once converted but have fallen away... There is a huge amount of trash produced by professing believers in Christ that blocks the way to the cross... Had the believers cleansed their spirit through obedience to the truth... where one soul was saved, it could have been twenty.«
Lack of readiness and spiritual indifference
»Although you were unprepared for the work, it began among you with mighty power... Had the congregation helped the Lord and the way for further work been fully opened, a work would have been accomplished as you have never experienced. But the sense of the brothers was not awakened, and they were highly indifferent to the matter. Some, who always sought only their own advantage, could not think of diverting their thoughts from themselves at this opportunity, even when the salvation of souls was at stake.«
The congregation as an obstacle to the light of truth

Lack of preparation for the conflict for suffering souls
»God has been set aside, and the congregation is not prepared to go into battle under the banner of Jesus Christ. It does not do the work for suffering souls that Christ acknowledges as done by Himself... God has given us a work that consists of rescuing souls from the community of Satan.«
