Ellen Gould White über: "Practical Design of the Sabbath Day"
Answer
The practical design of the Sabbath begins already on Friday with thorough preparations such as cooking, cleaning, and laying out clothing, in order to receive the holy day free from worldly concerns. On the Sabbath itself the family should rise early to avoid haste and to have time for shared spiritual activities, attending worship services, and walks in nature. While necessary assistance for the sick is permitted, worldly conversations, business planning, and unnecessary work should be strictly avoided so that the day remains a true joy and spiritual refreshment.
Preparation on the Preparation Day
On Friday the preparation for the Sabbath should be completed. Make sure that all clothing is ready and all cooking tasks are finished. Have the boots cleaned and take baths. It is possible to do this. ... Before sunset all worldly work should be set aside and all secular newspapers removed from view.
Avoiding Haste on Sabbath Morning
Do not waste the precious hours of the Sabbath in bed. On Sabbath morning the family should be up early on their feet. If they rise late, confusion and unrest arise in the preparation for breakfast and Sabbath school. There is haste, crowding, and impatience. Thus unholy feelings enter the home.
The Sabbath as Joy for the Family
We should spend time engaging our children. ... We can go outdoors with them; we can sit with them in groves and in bright sunshine and give their restless minds something that can nourish them, by talking with them about the works of God and inspiring them to love and reverence, by directing their attention to the beautiful objects in nature.
Sanctification of Thoughts and Words
God requires not only that we refrain from physical work on the Sabbath, but also that the spirit be disciplined to dwell on holy subjects. The fourth commandment is effectively violated when one talks about worldly matters or engages in light and trivial conversation.
Acts of Mercy
The sick need care on the Sabbath, and whatever is necessary for their comfort is an act of mercy and not a violation of the commandment. ... But none of our own work should be permitted to intrude into the holy time.
