In the face of efforts to restrict conscience and religious freedom, Ellen White's writings call for spiritual vigilance, united action, and persistent prayer. No person and no secular power is authorized to place itself between God and an individual's conscience or to enforce religious obligations through state coercion. Even in distress, the promise remains that human times of trouble are God's opportunities to support His people and reveal His saving power.
