Ellen White describes the Holy Spirit as one of the three living persons of the heavenly Trinity, who works in the full fullness of the deity. He is Christ’s representative on earth, yet free from the limitations of human personality and therefore remains accessible to all believers everywhere. Through the Spirit, Christ reveals His grace and works actively with those who are obedient to God.
The three persons of the heavenly Trinity
The Comforter, whom Christ promised to send after He ascended to heaven, is the Spirit in the full fullness of the deity, who makes the power of divine grace known to all those who accept Christ as personal Savior and believe in Him. There are three living persons of the heavenly trio; in the name of these three great powers— the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—those who receive Christ through living faith are baptized, and these powers will work together with the obedient.
The Holy Spirit as Christ’s Representative
The Holy Spirit is Christ’s representative, but stripped of human personality and independent of it. Hindered by humanity, Christ could not be personally present everywhere. Therefore, it was in their interest that He would go to the Father and send the Spirit to be His successor on earth. No one could then have an advantage because of his location or personal contact with Christ. Through the Spirit the Redeemer would be accessible to all. In this sense He would be nearer to them than if He had not ascended to heaven.
The task of the Spirit: glorifying Christ
Jesus said about the Spirit: “He will glorify Me.” The Redeemer came to glorify the Father through the demonstration of His love; thus the Spirit should glorify Christ by revealing His grace to the world. The image of God is to be reproduced in humanity. The glory of God, the glory of Christ, is founded in the perfection of the character of His people.
Personal presence of Christ through the Spirit
The work of the Holy Spirit is immeasurably great. From this source come power and effectiveness for God’s worker; and the Holy Spirit is the Comforter, as the personal presence of Christ for the soul.
