What does EGW write about...
Adventistische Schriften über: "Paul was arrested in Rome and placed under house arrest for the first time."
Answer
After his arrival in Rome, Paul was allowed, based on a favorable report from Captain Julius and a letter from Festus, to live in his own rented house instead of being thrown into prison. Although he was constantly chained to a guard, he could receive friends and freely proclaim the Kingdom of God for two years. He used this period of house arrest intensively to teach Jews and Gentiles the truth about Jesus Christ, which even led to conversions in the emperor’s household.
Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome
In Rome, Captain Julius handed over his prisoners to the captain of the imperial bodyguard. The favorable report he gave about Paul, together with Festus’s letter, led to the apostle being viewed kindly by the senior captain, and instead of being thrown into prison, he was permitted to live in his own rented house. Although he was still constantly chained to a soldier, he had the freedom to receive his friends and work for the promotion of Christ’s cause.
Through the favor of those who had Paul under their care, he was allowed to live in a spacious house where he could freely meet with his friends and also daily proclaim the truth to those who came to hear him. Thus he continued his efforts for two years, \"preached the Kingdom of God and taught the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with full confidence, without anyone hindering him.\
Before the end of this two‑year imprisonment, Paul could say: \"That my chains have become evident for Christ throughout the praetorium and among all others,\" and among those who sent greetings to the Philippians, he especially mentioned those \"who are from the emperor’s house.\
Three days after his arrival in Rome, he therefore summoned the leading men and plainly, directly explained why he had come to Rome as a prisoner.
Upon his arrival in Rome, Paul [later after the subsequent arrest] was thrown into a dark cell to remain there until his life’s course should be completed. Accused of having incited one of the most vile and terrible crimes against the city and the people, he became the object of general contempt.
