Overcoming sin is not achieved solely by one's own strength or mere knowledge, but by the proper exercise of the will, which acts as the governing power in a person. While feelings and promises are often unreliable, the conscious surrender of the will to Christ enables a connection with divine power that brings the entire being under the rule of His Spirit. Only when the human will works together with God's will can a new life in faith and victory over sinful impulses be realized.
The Importance of the Will and Surrender
What you must understand is the true power of the will. This is the governing power in the nature of man, the power of decision or choice. Everything depends on the correct action of the will. ... You cannot change your heart yourself, ... but you can decide to serve Him. You can give Him your will; He will then cause the willing and the accomplishing in you according to His pleasure.
Through the proper exercise of the will, a complete transformation in your life can be effected. By surrendering your will to Christ, you connect with the power that stands above all principalities and powers. You will receive strength from above that keeps you steadfast.
Your feelings, your impressions, your emotions are not to be trusted, for they are unreliable... If you fight the battle of faith with all your willpower, you will win. ... Your promises or your faith are worthless until you place your will on the side of faith and action.
A pure and noble life, a life of victory over desire and lust, is possible for anyone who unites his weak, wavering human will with the almighty, unshakable will of God.
When you surrender your will to Christ, your life with Christ will be hidden in God... You will have strength from God that holds you to His power; and a new life, indeed the life of living faith, will become possible for you. But your will must cooperate with God's will.
By resisting temptation or enduring it, circumstances are controlled by the power of the will in the name of Jesus. This is the overcoming, as Christ has overcome. “This is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.”
