The sanctuary consisted of two compartments, which were equipped with precious objects. In the first compartment, the Holy, were the seven‑branched golden lampstand, the table with the showbread, and the golden incense altar. The second compartment, the Most Holy, housed the Ark of the Covenant, which contained the tablets of the law and was covered by the Mercy Throne with two golden cherubim.

»In the first compartment, or the Holy, were the table with the showbread, the lampstand or lamp holder, and the incense altar. The table with the showbread stood in the north. With its ornamental crown it was overlaid with pure gold. ... In the south stood the seven‑branched lampstand with its seven lamps. ... Immediately before the curtain that separated the Holy from the Most Holy and the immediate presence of God, stood the golden incense altar.«
The Ark of the Covenant in the Most Holy
»In the Most Holy stood the Ark (the Ark of the Covenant), a chest of precious wood, overlaid with gold and serving as the repository for the two stone tablets on which God had inscribed the law of the Ten Commandments. Above the Ark, forming the lid of the holy chest, was the Mercy Throne, a splendid work of craftsmanship, crowned by two cherubim, one at each end, all made of solid gold.«
Purpose and material of the furnishings
»In the first compartment, the Holy, were three remarkable pieces of furniture: the golden lampstand, the table with the showbread, and the incense altar. The lampstand was made of solid gold, the table of the showbread and the incense altar of shittim wood, but all were overlaid throughout with pure gold. ... In the second compartment, the Most Holy, there were also three objects that deserve attention: the Ark of the Covenant, the Mercy Throne, and the cherubim.«
