Noah and his family waited anxiously for the waters to recede, for they longed to go out onto the earth again. Forty days after the mountain peaks became visible, they sent out a raven, a bird with a keen sense of smell, to find out whether the earth had become dry. This bird, which found nothing but water, continued to fly back and forth to the ark. Seven days later a dove was sent out, which, finding no place to rest, returned to the ark. Noah waited another seven days and sent the dove out again. When it returned in the evening with an olive leaf in its beak, great joy arose.
Anxiously Noah and his family watched the waters recede. He desired to go out onto the earth again. He sent out a raven, which flew back and forth to the ark. He did not receive the desired information and sent out a dove, which, finding no rest, returned to the ark. After seven days the dove was sent out again, and when the olive leaf was seen in its beak, great joy prevailed among this eight‑member family, which had been confined in the ark for so long.
The valleys fill quickly, and thousands are taken away in death. Some flee to the highest points of the land; but the water follows them swiftly. [...] But soon they too are covered with water, so there is no place of rest for Noah's dove. All lies still in death.
