Under the reign of the Persian king Artaxerxes, Ezra and Nehemiah acted as God‑called leaders in the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the renewal of the Jewish people. While Ezra, as priest and scribe, directed the study of God’s law, the reorganization of temple service, and profound spiritual reforms, Nehemiah, with determination and a strong prayer life, took charge of rebuilding the city walls. Despite massive resistance and threats from pagan neighbors, the wall was completed in a short time. Their work also stands as a model for the spiritual restoration work of God’s people in the end times.
The Calling and Work of Ezra and Nehemiah
»It was during his reign that Ezra and Nehemiah lived and worked. He is the one who, in the year 457 B.C., issued the third and final decree for the restoration of Jerusalem. His reign saw the return of a group of Jews under Ezra, the completion of Jerusalem’s walls by Nehemiah and his companions, the reorganization of temple service, and the great religious reforms initiated by Ezra and Nehemiah. During his long reign he often showed favor to God’s people, and in his trusted and esteemed Jewish friends, Ezra and Nehemiah, he recognized men who had been called by God for a special work.«

»Nehemiah’s journey to Jerusalem was carried out in safety. ... However, his arrival in Jerusalem with a military escort, which showed that he had come on an important mission, aroused the jealousy of the pagan tribes living near the city ... Leading this evil work were certain chiefs of those tribes: Sanballat, the Horonite, Tobijah, the Ammonite, and Geshem, the Arab. ... On the third night after his arrival, Nehemiah rose at midnight and went out with a few trusted companions to personally inspect the devastation of Jerusalem. On his mule he rode from one part of the city to another, viewing the torn‑down walls and gates of his ancestors’ city.«
Completion of the Walls Despite Hostile Schemes
»Regardless of the open and secret attacks of the enemies, the construction work progressed steadily, and in less than two months after Nehemiah’s arrival in Jerusalem the city was surrounded by its defensive walls, and the builders could walk upon the walls and look down upon their defeated and astonished enemies. “When all our enemies heard of it and all the heathens around us saw this,” writes Nehemiah, “they greatly lost heart; for they recognized that this work had been done by our God.”«

»The work of restoration and reform carried out by the returning exiles under the leadership of Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah presents a picture of a work of spiritual restoration that is to be accomplished in the last days of earth’s history. The remnant of Israel was a weak people, exposed to the reprisals of its enemies; yet through them God intended to preserve on earth the knowledge of Himself and of His law. They were the keepers of true worship, the preservers of the holy sayings.«
