Ellen Gould White über: "Mission on the Sabbath, allowed or not?"

Answer

Missionary activities and works of mercy are expressly permitted on the Sabbath and do not constitute a violation of the day of rest. Jesus Himself showed by His example that relieving suffering—such as in medical missionary work—as well as bearing witness and soul winning are in harmony with the Sabbath. The Sabbath School, for example, is described as a significant mission field, while ordinary, postponable work should rest on the holy day of God.

Works of Mercy and Witness Giving on the Sabbath

»They are often called on the Sabbath to visit the sick, and may be forced to make this day a day of strenuous work. Such work to alleviate suffering was called by our Redeemer a work of mercy and not a violation of the Sabbath. [...] They have failed to grasp the true significance not only of attending religious gatherings, but also of bearing witness to Christ and the truth.«

Medical Mission Work and Sabbath Sanctification

»Those men with responsibility in medical mission work bear the duty to instruct doctors, nurses, and helpers concerning the holiness of God's holy day. [...] The needs of the suffering humanity must never be neglected. The Savior has shown us by His example that it is lawful to relieve suffering on the Sabbath. Yet unnecessary work, such as ordinary treatments and surgeries that can be postponed, should be deferred.«

The Sabbath School as a Mission Field

»There is an extremely valuable mission field in the Sabbath School, and if there are now signs of good, they are only hints and beginnings of what can be done. [...] The Sabbath School is a mission field, and in this important work far more missionary spirit should be revealed than has been the case in the past. The Sabbath School should be one of the greatest and most effective tools for leading souls to Christ.«

Mission Work for Soul Winning on the Sabbath

»The Sabbath School is an important branch of mission work, not only because it imparts to young and old an understanding of God's Word, but because it awakens in them a love for His holy truths and a desire to study them themselves [...] There should be zealous, faithful workers in our Sabbath Schools who watch and discern where the Spirit of God is moving, and cooperate with the angels of God in winning souls for Christ.«

Why I built EGW Vision

Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.

EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.

My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
