Ellen Gould White über: "Meaning of the Mark of the Beast"
Answer
The Mark of the Beast is understood as the observance of Sunday instead of the biblical Sabbath. It represents a sign of loyalty to papal authority and stands in direct opposition to the seal of God, the Sabbath as a sign of the Creator's power. Whoever consciously breaks the fourth commandment to obey a human command and thereby places the authority of Rome above God's command receives the Mark of the Beast.
The Mark as a Sign of Papal Authority
»The distinctive feature of the beast and thus its image is the transgression of God's commandments. Daniel speaks of the little horn, the papacy: “It will think to change times and law.” Only by altering God's law could the papacy elevate itself above God; whoever knowingly keeps the law in this altered form renders the power that made the change the highest honor. Such obedience to papal laws would be a sign of loyalty to the pope instead of to God.«
The Sabbath Change as the Mark
»As a sign of the authority of the Catholic Church, papal writers state: “The fact of changing the Sabbath to Sunday, which Protestants tolerate … for by strictly observing Sunday they acknowledge the Church's power to order festivals and to command them under threat of sin.” So what is the change of the Sabbath other than the sign or mark of the authority of the Roman Church – “the Mark of the Beast”?«
The Mark of the Beast is the Sunday Sanctification
»The Mark of the Beast is the opposite – the observance of the first day of the week. This mark distinguishes those who recognize the supremacy of papal authority from those who recognize the authority of God.«
The Great Loyalty Test
»The Sabbath will be the great loyalty test; for it is the especially disputed point of truth. While observing the false Sabbath in accordance with the law of the state, contrary to the fourth commandment, is a profession of loyalty to a power that stands in opposition to God, keeping the true Sabbath in obedience to God's law is proof of loyalty to the Creator. While one class, by accepting the sign of subjection to earthly powers, receives the Mark of the Beast, the other, by choosing the sign of loyalty to divine authority, receives the seal of God.«
Seal of God and Mark of the Beast
»The sign or seal of God is His Sabbath, and the seal or Mark of the Beast stands in direct opposition to it; it is an imitation Sabbath on the “day of the sun.” According to Revelation 14:12, those who do not receive the Mark of the Beast keep God's commandments; and the Sabbath is found in the fourth commandment; they keep the Lord's Sabbath; they have His sign or seal.«
