The house of God is a holy place where children should learn to behave reverently and calmly, rather than following their own desires. Parents are expressly urged to raise their children so that they do not view the congregation as a place for snacking or uncontrolled behavior. If children are restless or disturb the service, they should be removed to protect the sanctity of the worship.
Reverence in the House of God
Parents should curb their children's will with patience, firmness, and determination; and when they bring them into the house of God, they must make it clear that this is not a place where they can do as they please, not a place for snacking or to display their willfulness and passionate temperament.
If the children cannot be restrained, if the parents feel that restraint is too great a demand, the child should be removed from the church immediately; it should not be allowed to distract the thoughts of the listeners by talking or wandering.
I saw that they [the children], when brought into the house of God, should know where they are—that they are not at home, but where God meets His people, and they should be prevented from any playing or wandering.
Instead, many study how they can get something good to eat. You place butter, eggs, and meat on your tables, and your children eat from them. They are fed with exactly the things that arouse their animal passions, and then you come to the meeting and ask God to bless and save your children.
This feature of snacking in churches has grown so far that a modern church building today would no longer meet the standard unless it has a kitchen, a pantry, and a dining hall. This condition is what began in the "time of delay," just as it was described in the parable.
