Ellen Gould White über: "Job 22 + 23 explained"

Answer

Job 22 and 23 reflect the conflict between the false accusations of his friends and Job’s deep longing for God. While Eliphaz in chapter 22 mistakenly claims that Job’s suffering is the result of personal sin, Job in chapter 23 longs to find God in order to proclaim his innocence. Despite his desperation, Job holds fast to the belief that after this trial he will emerge “like gold”.

Getting to know God and finding peace

»“Now become acquainted with Him and have peace; thereby good will happen to you. Take instruction from His mouth and place His words in your heart” ... “Yes, the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver; for then you will have your delight in the Almighty and lift your face toward God. You will pray to Him, and He will hear you... If they cast you down and you say, ‘Elevation will come!’, then He will rescue the humble.”«

Job’s longing for God and his trial

»“Ah, that I might know where I could find Him, that I might come to His throne! ... Behold, I go forward, but He is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive Him: to the left, where He works, but I cannot see Him; He hides Himself to the right, that I cannot see Him. Yet He knows the way I walk; if He has tested me, I will emerge like gold.” ... Through his patient endurance he defended his own character and thereby the character of the One whose representative he was.«

Misfortune is not proof of guilt

»It is very natural for people to think that great catastrophes are a sure sign of great crimes and enormous sins; but people often err when they measure character in that way. ... Job’s friends tried to get him to acknowledge that his suffering was the result of sin and to condemn him. They portrayed his case as that of a great sinner; but the Lord rebuked them for their judgment concerning His faithful servant.«

True education through the knowledge of God

»In the knowledge of God all true knowledge and every genuine development have their origin. ... “Now become acquainted with Him” (Job 22:21), is His message to humanity. The method outlined in these words was the method applied in the education of the father of our race [Adam].«

Response to loveless critics

»Job was not understood by his friends. He throws their accusations back at them. ... “You are all miserable comforters,” is the answer he gives to their criticisms and rebukes. “Even I,” says Job, “could speak like you: if your soul were in place of my soul, I could heap words against you and shake my head over you.” But he explains that he would not do this. He says he would strengthen them with his mouth.«
