What does Ellen White write about...
Adventistische Schriften über: "Jesus Christ bore the sins of the world in the Garden of Gethsemane. Paul says that sin separates man from God. There are interpreters who see the separation of Jesus and God the Father only at the cross, when Jesus said, "Father, Father, why have you forsaken me?" The separation between Father and Son already occurred in the Garden of Gethsemane."
Answer
The present quotations clearly confirm that the separation between Jesus and the Father began already in the Garden of Gethsemane, not only at the cross. Ellen White describes how Jesus there took upon himself the sins of the world and thereby experienced separation from the Father. The divine light withdrew from Him, and He felt the Father's frown. The cup that He feared to drink was the cup of separation from God because of the burden of sin.
On the cross this separation reached its climax in the anguished cry: \"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?\" The scriptures thus show a continuous process that began in Gethsemane and culminated at the cross.
The Separation Began in the Garden of Gethsemane
»We can only have a vague idea of the unspeakable terror of the dear Son of God in Gethsemane, as He recognized His separation from His Father as a result of bearing humanity's sin. He became sin for the fallen race.«
The Cup of Separation from God
»The cup that He asked to be removed, which looked so bitter to His soul, was the cup of separation from God as a result of the world's sin.«
The Divine Light Departed in Gethsemane
»When the Son of God knelt in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, the agony of His spirit forced sweat from His pores like large drops of blood. Here was where the horror of great darkness surrounded Him. The sins of the world lay upon Him. The divine light of God withdrew from His sight, and He passed into the hands of the powers of darkness.«
The Unity with the Father Broke
»When Christ sensed His unity with the Father broken, He feared that in His human nature He would not be able to endure the coming conflict with the powers of darkness. Christ's soul was filled with fear of separation from God.«
Cut Off from God's Presence
»But now He seemed to be excluded from the light of the supporting presence of God. Now He was counted among the transgressors. He had to bear the guilt of fallen humanity. Upon Him, who knew no sin, the injustice of us all had to be placed.«
Gethsemane and the Cross Connected
»It was the weight of sin that made Him sweat in the Garden of Gethsemane like large drops of blood and that led Him at the cross to the cry: \"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?\«
