James White emphasized that the Holy Spirit addresses hearts through a “quiet, gentle voice” and brings order rather than confusion. James White then opened his Bible and read to them that God is a God of order and not of confusion; that the Holy Spirit speaks to hearts through a “quiet, gentle voice.” He said: “Satan tempts you to act in this way, to cause your neighbors to hate the name of the Adventists...”
Early in his wife's ministry, James White made clear that the Christian “should earnestly pray to be supported by the Holy Spirit in studying the Scriptures for the whole truth and for his entire duty. He does not have the freedom to turn away from it in order to experience his duty through any of the gifts.”
Often James and Ellen knelt down while studying and asked God to send His Holy Spirit, as He had promised, to guide them into the truth.
We have long been convinced that the teachings of the Holy Spirit in these visions are indispensable for the welfare of the people preparing for transformation into the Kingdom of God. In no other way can secret sins be rebuked and vile people... exposed and thwarted in their evil intentions.
Elder White rose and said: “I am distressed. The Spirit of God is saddened. I resist this influence in the name of the Lord. O God, correct this impure spirit.”
