According to biblical teachings, the gift of prophecy primarily serves believers and not unbelievers, while signs such as speaking in tongues are often intended as a signal for those who are distant. Prophecy has the specific task of building up the congregation, perfecting the saints, and strengthening the service to the body of Christ. Nevertheless, prophetic messages can move people to study the Holy Scripture more deeply and thus come to faith. In Adventist history, prophecy was used to strengthen believers in times of disappointment and to guard them from errant paths. Ultimately, a prophet functions as an inspired teacher whose words affirm and clarify the already existing biblical truth.
Purpose of the prophetic gift
In comparing these gifts he says: “Therefore speaking in tongues is a sign not for believers but for unbelievers; but prophecy does not serve the unbelievers, but the believers.”

Definition of a prophet
A “prophet” in modern usage is predominantly someone who predicts the future... However, a prophet is not necessarily someone who predicts, but one who speaks for God, an inspired teacher.
