Ellen Gould White über: "Is physical or psychological violence a biblical ground for divorce?"

According to the available scriptures, in the light of the Bible there is only one reason that completely dissolves a marriage before God and permits remarriage: adultery. Even if the laws of the land may allow divorce for other reasons, the marriage vow before God remains binding as long as there is no unfaithfulness.

In cases of extreme domestic conflicts or burdens, the texts mention that a physical separation (preferably without living with the spouse) may be necessary or advisable. However, this does not automatically entitle one to a biblical divorce with the right to a new marriage, provided the partner has not violated the marriage vow through immorality.

Only one biblical reason for divorce

»I saw that the congregation had not taken the correct view of the Scripture. A woman may be legally divorced from her husband according to the laws of the land and yet not be divorced in the eyes of God and according to the higher law. There is only one sin, namely adultery, that can place the husband or wife in a situation where they are freed from the marriage vow in the eyes of God. Although the laws of the land may grant a divorce, in the light of the Bible, according to God's laws, they are still man and woman.«

Separation without breaking the marriage vow
