Ellen Gould White

What does Ellen White write about...

Ellen Gould White über: "I ask you again: Why does God give you His Spirit and allow miracles to happen among you? Is it because you fulfill the law or because you have heard of Christ and believe in Him? Galatians 3:5 HFA How should I understand this verse?"

Answer

This verse reminds us that the work of the Holy Spirit and divine miracles are not the fruit of human effort or law‑keeping. The Apostle Paul makes clear here that God gives these gifts because believers trust in Christ and have received the message of the gospel in faith.

It is a warning against the error of trying to influence God through external forms or merits. True righteousness and God's power are received only through faith in Christ’s sacrifice, whereby a person obtains a direct connection to divine grace.

Receiving the Power of the Spirit through Faith

\n\n

»\"This alone I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit through the works of the law or through the preaching of faith? Are you so foolish? You began in the Spirit; do you now wish to complete it in the flesh? ... The one who now gives you the Spirit and performs such deeds among you, does he do it through the works of the law or through the preaching of faith?\" With this, Paul placed the believers in Galatia before the tribunal of their own conscience and tried to halt them on their path. The apostle trusted in God's power for salvation and refused to acknowledge the teachings of the fallen teachers. He endeavored to show the converts that they had been grossly deceived, but that by returning to their former faith in the gospel they could still thwart Satan's purpose.«

Freedom through Righteousness by Faith

\n

»\"Through hearing by faith\" they received the Spirit of God and became \"children of God through faith in Christ\". ... Paul and his co‑workers proclaimed the doctrine of righteousness through faith in Christ’s atoning sacrifice. Thus the Galatians were taught the fundamental truths about \"God the Father\" and \"our Lord Jesus Christ\", who gave Himself for our sins so that He might deliver us from this present evil world.«

The Danger of Works‑Righteousness

\n

»The men who had tried to turn them away from their faith in the gospel were hypocrites... Their religion consisted of a cycle of ceremonies through which they hoped to win God’s favor. ... Replacing the holiness of heart and life with external religious forms is still as pleasing to the unrenewed nature as it was in the days of those Jewish teachers. Today, as then, there are false spiritual leaders... It is Satan’s deliberate effort to distract the senses from the hope of salvation through faith in Christ.«
