Ellen Gould White über: "How may I Romans 8:15"
Answer
Romans 8:15 describes the transition from a spirit of slavery and fear to a spirit of sonship, through which we can address God trustingly as “Abba, Father.” This condition is achieved when we no longer labor under the law in our own strength, but receive Christ’s grace in faith. As adopted children of God, we are led by the Holy Spirit into a deep, trusting fellowship with the heavenly Father.
Liberation from Slavery through Adoption
»“For you have not received a spirit of slavery that makes you fear again; but you have received a spirit of sonship, by which we cry: Abba, dear Father!” The spirit of slavery is generated by attempting to live in accordance with a legalistic religion, striving to fulfill the law’s demands in one’s own strength. There is only hope for us when we come under the Abrahamic covenant, which is the covenant of grace through faith in Christ Jesus.«
The Testimony of the Spirit and Our Sonship
»You have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, “Abba! Father!”, it is the Spirit Himself who testifies to our spirit that we are children of God. ... We may address Him with the loving name “Our Father,” which is a sign of our affection toward Him and a pledge of His tender care and relationship with us. And the Son of God, who sees the heirs of grace, “does not shy away from calling them brothers.” They even have a holier relationship with God than the angels, who never fell.«
The Change through the New Birth
»In the new birth, the heart is brought into harmony with God, just as it is aligned with His law. When this tremendous transformation has taken place in the sinner, he has moved from death to life, from sin to holiness, from transgression and rebellion to obedience and loyalty. The old life of alienation from God is ended; the new life of reconciliation, faith, and love has begun. Then the “righteousness that the law demands” will be fulfilled in us, as we walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. And the language of the soul will be: “Oh, how I love your law! It is on my mind all day.”«
God’s Love is Greater than Earthly Parents
»One of the lessons we are to learn in the school of Christ is that the Lord’s love for us is far greater than that of our earthly parents. We are to have unquestioned faith and complete trust in Him. “The Spirit Himself bears witness to our spirit that we are God’s children. As children, we are also heirs, namely God’s heirs and co‑heirs with Christ; for we suffer with Him so that we may also be raised to glory with Him.”«
Parental Responsibility in the Light of Sonship
»The Lord revealed Himself not only as the true and living God, but as our heavenly Father, when He sent His only‑begotten Son into the world to purchase our salvation. “The Spirit bears witness to our spirit that we are God’s sons; for we have not again received a spirit of slavery to fear, but we have received a spirit of sonship, through which we cry: Abba, Father.” When we accept the invitation of the Spirit of God, we become “heirs of God and co‑heirs with Christ.”«
