A proper handling of emotions means not using them as a test of one's spiritual condition, since emotions are changeable and often produce deceptive images of God. One who learns to subordinate his feelings to reason and the Word of God no longer perceives God as a harsh “overseer”, but as a merciful source of love. By consciously choosing to contemplate God’s love rather than yielding to negative impulses, the mind is disciplined and the perception of God’s character is healed.

Emotions are not the measure of God’s love

»One cannot rely on one's feelings as proof of acceptance before God, because feelings are changeable. One must place one's feet on the promises of God's Word ... and learn to live by faith. As soon as one begins to contemplate one's feelings, one is on dangerous ground. When one feels happy and joyful, one is very confident ... Yet circumstances arise that bring depression and sad feelings; then the spirit naturally begins to doubt whether the Lord is with him or not. Feelings must not be made a test of one's spiritual condition, whether they are good or discouraging. The Word of God should be our proof of our true standing before Him.«
