Answer
God reveals His will primarily in three ways: through His Word in the Holy Scriptures, through the guidance of His providence, and through the pleading impressions of the Holy Spirit on the heart. To clearly discern His will, we must deny our own selfish inclinations and develop a sincere willingness to give God's desires priority over our own plans. Whoever obediently follows the already revealed light will, through the Spirit, receive an ever deeper understanding of God's purposes for his life.
The three ways of divine revelation
There are three ways in which the Lord reveals His will to us, to guide us and to enable us to lead others. ... God reveals His will to us in His Word, the Holy Scriptures. His voice is also revealed in His work through providence; and it will be recognized if we do not separate our souls from Him by going our own ways ... Another way in which God's voice is heard is through the pleading of His Holy Spirit, who makes impressions on the heart that are worked out in character.
The study of Scripture as a test stone
We should measure every thought, every word, and every deed by the test stone of God's revealed will. In all things the question should be: Will this please God? Will it be in accordance with the teachings of His Word? And if there is indecision of the spirit regarding the duty, our natural heart will ask for forbearance, the inclination to follow. But let us always choose the sure way, no matter how much self‑denial it may require.
Obedience leads to greater clarity
Christ said: "If anyone wants to do His will, he will discern whether this teaching is from God." Instead of questioning and rejecting the incomprehensible, pay attention to the light that already shines upon you, and you will receive greater light. Fulfill, through the grace of Christ, every duty that has been made clear to your understanding, and you will be enabled to also understand and fulfill those that you now doubt.
The question of the heart
Carry out all your work strictly according to religious principles. Let your earnest question be: "What can I do to please the Master?" ... Ask at every step: "Is this the Lord’s way? Am I, in spirit, in word, in action, in harmony with His will?
