The Wise Men from the East knew, through the study of the Hebrew Scriptures and inherited promises—especially the prophecy of Balaam concerning the star from Jacob—that the appearance of the Messiah was near and the time was fulfilled. When on the night of Christ’s birth the glory of God appeared, they saw a radiant star in the sky that served as a divine sign to them. Additionally, they were instructed in dreams to seek the newborn Prince, while the Holy Spirit convinced their hearts of the truth of the Scriptures.
