Jesus cared for the lost holistically: He healed their physical ailments and thereby opened their hearts to spiritual truth. He went to people, showed compassion, provided for their external needs, and then invited them to follow Him. In doing so, He laid physical relief as the foundation for spiritual restoration. For us, this means opening people to the love of Christ through personal service, compassion, and practical help.
Christ's Method: Go to the people, show compassion, and serve
»Christ’s method alone will bring true success in reaching people. The Savior mingled with the people as one who desired their good. He showed compassion for them, served their needs, and gained their trust. Then He invited them: “Follow Me!” … The poor are to be helped, the sick are to be nursed, the mourners and those who have lost loved ones are to be comforted, the ignorant are to be instructed, the inexperienced are to be advised. … If we would spend less time in preaching and more time in personal service, greater results would be achieved.«
Care for the body first to open the heart to spiritual truth
»Their physical health should be cared for first to prepare the way for their minds to be reached by the truths the apostles were to preach. The Savior of the world devoted more time and labor to healing the ailments of the sick than to preaching. … When the suffering body has been relieved and you have shown a lively interest in the sufferer, the heart opens, and you can pour in the heavenly balm. When you look to Jesus and draw from Him knowledge, strength, and grace, you can impart to others His comfort.«

»Many who came to Christ for help had brought disease upon themselves through their own fault, yet He did not refuse to heal them. And as virtue from Him entered into these souls, they were convicted of sin, and many were healed both of their spiritual disease and their physical afflictions.«
Alleviate physical distress to inspire trust in Christ’s love
