Practical Ways of Christian Service
God expects personal service from everyone to whom He has entrusted the knowledge of truth for this time. Not everyone can go as missionaries to distant lands, but everyone can be home missionaries in their families and neighborhoods. There are many ways church members can pass the message to those around them. One of the most successful is leading a helpful, self‑less Christian life.
My brothers and sisters, devote yourselves to the Lord for service. Do not let any opportunity pass unused. Visit the sick and suffering and show a friendly interest in them. If possible, do something to make it more comfortable for them. Through this means you can reach their hearts and speak a word for Christ.
Instead of closing their love and compassion within themselves, they should seize every opportunity to contribute to the welfare of others and dispense the fullness of their affection in a pure and sanctified love for souls... Kind words, looks of compassion, expressions of appreciation would be for some struggling and lonely person like a cup of cold water for a thirsty soul.
There are ways in which everyone can render personal service for God. Some can write a letter to a distant friend or send a magazine to someone seeking the truth. Others can give counsel to those in trouble. Those who know how to treat the sick can help in that area. Others, who have the necessary qualifications, can give Bible lessons or lead Bible classes.
By passing on to others the love and tenderness that God has so abundantly given us, we should let our light shine... We can give God nothing that is not already His, but we can help the suffering people around us. We can provide them with the necessities of this life and at the same time speak with them about the wonderful love of God.
Love and fidelity to Christ are the source of all true service. In a heart touched by His love, the desire to work for Him is awakened... Whether at home, in the neighborhood, or at school: the presence of the poor, the oppressed, the ignorant, or the unfortunate should not be regarded as a mishap, but as a precious opportunity for service.
