Regeneration is the only effective remedy for the sinful soul, because a person cannot overcome his fallen heart and sinful inclinations by his own power. Through the work of the Holy Spirit in the new birth, the mind is renewed, life is cleansed, and the power of sinful habits is broken by the power of Christ. Instead of being dominated by sin, the believer experiences forgiveness, character transformation, and the power for willing obedience to God's commandments.
Regeneration as the only remedy for the sinful soul
»It must be a new birth, a new mind through the work of the Spirit of God, who purifies life and refines character. This union with God makes mortals fit for the glorious kingdom of heaven. No human invention can ever find a remedy for the sinful soul. Only through repentance and humility, a submission to divine requirements, can the work of grace be accomplished.«
Freedom from sinful habits through the new life in Christ
»“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.” Through the power of Christ, men and women have broken the chains of sinful habits. They have renounced selfishness. The unholy have become reverent, the drunkards sober, the lawless pure. Souls that bore the image of Satan have been reshaped into the image of God. ... When the Spirit of God governs mind and heart, the converted soul bursts into a new song; for it recognizes that in its experience God's promise has been fulfilled, that its transgression is forgiven and its sin covered.«
Spiritual renewal and willing obedience
»The power of Christ alone can bring about the transformation of heart and mind that all must experience who wish to share in the new life with Him in the heavenly kingdom. “Unless someone is born again,” said the Savior, “he cannot see the kingdom of God.” ... To serve Him rightly, we must be born of the divine Spirit. This will lead to vigilance. It will cleanse the heart, renew the mind, and give us a new ability to know and love God. It will lead us to a willing obedience to all His requirements.«
