Ellen Gould White über: "Faith, what is it?"
Answer
Faith is the trust in God and the conviction that He loves us and knows what is best for us. It is not merely head knowledge or feeling, but an act through which the whole person is surrendered to the guidance of Jesus Christ. True faith is manifested in a willing dedication of the heart and leads to obedience that arises from love for God.
The Definition of Saving Faith
»Faith, saving faith, is to be taught. The definition of this faith in Jesus Christ can be described in a few words: It is the act of the soul by which the whole person is surrendered to the care and control of Jesus Christ. He remains in Christ and Christ remains through faith as the Highest in the soul. The believer entrusts his soul and his body to God...«
Faith as Trust and Acceptance of God's Ways
»Faith is trust in God – the belief that He loves us and knows what is best for our welfare. Thus He leads us to choose His way instead of our own. In place of our ignorance we accept His wisdom; in place of our weakness His strength; in place of our sinfulness His righteousness. Our life, we ourselves, already belong to Him; faith recognizes His right of ownership and receives His blessing.«
Distinction Between Mere Faith and True Faith
»When we speak of faith, there is a distinction that should be kept in mind. There is a kind of faith that is completely different from [saving] faith. The existence and power of God, the truth of His Word are facts that even Satan and his armies cannot deny in the heart. ... But that is not faith. Where not only a belief in God's Word is present, but a submission of the will to Him; where the heart is given to Him, the affection fixed on Him, there is faith – faith that works through love and purifies the soul.«
Faith as a Means, Not an End
»Faith is not the reason for our salvation, but it is the great blessing – the eye that sees, the ear that hears, the feet that walk, the hand that grasps. It is the means, not the end. When Christ gave His life to save sinners, why should I not receive this blessing? My faith seizes it, and thus my faith is the certainty of what one hopes for, a non‑doubt of what one does not see.«
Surrender of the Mind and Will
»What is faith? “It is a firm confidence in what one hopes for, and a non‑doubt of what one does not see.” It is an assent of the mind to God's words that binds the heart in willing dedication and service to God... Faith is the surrender of intellectual powers to God, the abandoning of one's own thinking and will in favor of God and making Christ the only door to enter the kingdom of God.«
Faith and Works
»True faith, which completely relies on Christ, will be revealed through obedience to all of God's requirements. ... In all ages there have been those who claimed God's favor while neglecting some of His commandments. But Scripture declares that faith is made “complete” through works; and that faith without the works of obedience is “dead.”«

Why I built EGW Vision
Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.
EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.
My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
