Ellen Gould White über: "Explain Galatians 3"
Answer
In Galatians 3, Paul addresses the believers with sharp words to turn them away from the dangerous assumption that one can be justified before God through works of the law or ceremonial traditions. He reminds them that they received the Holy Spirit not by fulfilling the law, but through the “preaching of faith”.
Paul makes it clear that the attempt to become perfect through the flesh after having begun in the Spirit is a serious deception. The central teaching is justification solely through faith in Christ’s atoning sacrifice, through which people become children of God.
Paul warns against turning away from the Gospel
»“O you foolish Galatians,” he exclaimed, “who has beguiled you that you do not obey the truth, when Jesus Christ was presented before your eyes as the Crucified among you? This alone I want to know from you: Did you receive the Spirit through the works of the law or through the preaching of faith? Are you so foolish? You began in the Spirit; do you now wish to complete it in the flesh? … The one who now gives you the Spirit and performs such deeds among you, does he do so through the works of the law or through the preaching of faith?” Thus Paul placed the believers in Galatia before the tribunal of their own conscience and sought to stop them on their way.«
Liberation through Faith in Christ
»Paul and his co‑workers proclaimed the doctrine of righteousness through faith in Christ’s atoning sacrifice. Thus the Galatians were taught the fundamental truths about “God the Father” and “our Lord Jesus Christ”... “Through the preaching of faith” they received the Spirit of God and became “God’s children through faith in Christ.”«
The Danger of Jewish Ceremonies as a Substitute for Christ
»In the Galatian churches, open, unmasked error displaced the gospel message. Christ, the true foundation of faith, was effectively abandoned in favor of the outdated ceremonies of Judaism. The apostle saw that decisive measures had to be taken and the sternest warnings issued if the believers in Galatia were to be rescued from the dangerous influences.«
