What does Ellen White write about...
Adventistische Schriften über: "Explain, from the perspective of the ancestors and the prophets, the details and the sequence of Moses' encounter with God at the burning bush."
Answer
The encounter at the burning bush took place on Mount Horeb while Moses was tending his flocks. God chose this symbol of a simple, burning yet unconsumed shrub to veil His glory so that a person could stand in His presence.
The sequence began with the visual miracle, followed by God's admonishing voice, which called Moses to reverence and to remove his shoes. In this dialogue God revealed Himself as the God of the fathers and called the humbled Moses, despite his initial self‑doubt, to be the Deliverer of Israel.
The Call at Mount Horeb
»When one day he led his flocks near Horeb, the “Mountain of God,” Moses saw a bush in flames; its branches, foliage, and trunk were all burning, yet seemed not to be consumed. He drew near to behold the marvelous sight, when a voice from the flame called him by name. With trembling lips he replied, “Here I am.” He was warned not to approach irreverently: “Take off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground... I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” He was the One who had revealed Himself as the Angel of the Covenant to the fathers in former times. “And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.”«
The Commission for Deliverance
»While Moses waited in reverent awe before God, the words continued: “I have seen the misery of My people in Egypt and have heard their cries over their oppressors; I know their suffering; and I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians... Come now, I will send you to Pharaoh so that you may lead My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” Astonished and frightened by the command, Moses recoiled and said, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and lead the children of Israel out of Egypt?” The answer was: “Surely I will be with you...”«
Christ in the Burning Bush
»The burning bush in which Christ appeared to Moses revealed God. The symbol chosen to represent the deity was a modest shrub that seemed to have no allure. It housed the Infinite. The all‑merciful God veiled His glory in a very humble form so that Moses could look upon Him and remain alive... God's glory was dimmed and His majesty concealed so that the weak eyesight of finite humans could perceive it.«
Preparation in the School of Poverty
»He tended the flocks of Jethro, and while he fulfilled his modest duties as a shepherd, God prepared him to become a spiritual shepherd of His sheep, indeed of His people Israel. When Moses led the flock into the wilderness and came to the mountain of God, to Horeb, “the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush.” ... The time had now fully arrived for God to have Moses exchange his shepherd’s staff for the staff of God.«
