Warning against theatrical music in worship

»Brother Stockings has a good knowledge of music, but his musical training was of a character better suited to the stage than to the solemn worship of God. Singing is just as much the worship of God in a religious gathering as speaking, and every mannerism or peculiarity that is cultivated draws the attention of the people to itself and destroys the serious, solemn impression that should be the result of sacred music. Everything strange and eccentric in singing diminishes the seriousness and holiness of religious worship.«
