Adventistische Schriften über: "Ellen White's Exposition on the Walk to Emmaus (The Desire of Ages)"
Answer
Ellen White describes the walk to Emmaus as a moment of deep disappointment, in which the disciples were so immersed in their grief that they initially did not recognize the risen Jesus beside them. She emphasizes that their unbelief and the forgetting of Christ’s predictions about his resurrection on the third day clouded their judgment. Jesus approached them as a compassionate companion, close, who wanted to heal their hearts through the exposition of the holy Scriptures before he revealed himself to them. After the realization that he is alive, their exhaustion turned into boundless joy, which drove them to share the glad tidings immediately with others. Their way back to Jerusalem was illuminated by the certainty of his presence and the “victory of righteousness.”
The Grief and Unbelief of the Disciples
It is strange that the disciples did not remember Christ’s words and did not recognize that He had predicted the events that had occurred! They did not understand that the last part of His revelation would be fulfilled just as surely as the first part, namely that He would rise again on the third day. This was the part they should have recalled. The priests and councilors did not forget this. [...] But the disciples did not remember these words.
Jesus' Desire for Comfort
As they spoke about the events that had taken place, Jesus longed to comfort them. He had seen their sorrow; He understood the contradictory, confusing thoughts that brought them to consider: Could this man, who allowed himself to be so humbled, be the Christ? Their pain could not be held back, and they wept. Jesus knew that their hearts were united with Him in love, and He yearned to wipe away their tears and fill them with joy and gladness. But He first had to give them lessons that they would never forget.
The Exposition of the Prophecies
Jesus, who walked beside them, did not reveal Himself abruptly. He addressed them as fellow travelers and asked them about the subject of their conversation and why they were so sad. [...] But Jesus said to them: “O you who do not understand, whose hearts are so sluggish to believe everything the prophets have said! Did not the Christ have to endure this and enter into His glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He unfolded for them the Scriptures that pertained to Him personally.
The Invitation to Stay
During the journey the sun had set... As the disciples were about to enter their house, the stranger acted as if He intended to continue His journey. But the disciples were drawn to Him. Their souls hungered to hear more of Him. “Stay with us,” they said. [...] Christ answered this plea and “went in to stay with them.”
The Joyful Return to Jerusalem
Their fatigue and hunger have vanished. They leave their meal untouched and, filled with joy, immediately set out again on the path they came, hurrying to bring the news to the disciples in the city. [...] Sometimes running, sometimes stumbling, they press forward, their invisible companion close beside them all the way.
