Ellen White distinguishes between ordinary dreams that arise from the everyday things of life, and those that are of divine origin. While natural dreams have nothing to do with the Spirit of God and there are even false, Satan‑inspired dreams, divine dreams are equivalent to visions and are fruits of the spirit of prophecy. These divine dreams carry their own evidence of authenticity when one considers the persons involved and the circumstances of their granting.
Distinguishing Divine and Everyday Dreams
There are many dreams that arise from the ordinary things of life, with which the Spirit of God has nothing to do. “There are also false dreams as well as false visions that are inspired by the spirit of Satan. But dreams from the Lord are equated with visions in the Word of God and are equally genuine fruits of the spirit of prophecy as visions. Such dreams contain, taking into account the persons who have them and the circumstances under which they are given, their own proof of authenticity.”
Divine Dreams as Night Visions
This vision represented a type of night vision, the kind she sometimes had when she was awake during the night hours. The other kind, which corresponds to what the Bible describes as night visions, were those that came to her during the hours of sleep. ... In describing these experiences she sometimes uses the word vision and sometimes the word dream. The scenes presented were equally vivid and served as the basis for later writings just as all the scenes that were presented to her in public visions.
