Ellen G. White describes in The Great Controversy and other writings that the last events are not primarily a purely worldly or military war between nations, but the worldwide spiritual climax of the great conflict between Christ and Satan. Although wars, unrest, and hostilities among the nations increase, the winds of conflict are held back until God's people are sealed. In the end, destruction and worldwide bloodshed are directed especially within the framework of God's judgment against the ungodly and false shepherds, as humanity has fully aligned itself with one side or the other.

»The swords that were to kill God's people are now being used to destroy their enemies. Everywhere there is strife and bloodshed. \"A clamor will resound to the ends of the earth; for the Lord has a lawsuit with the nations; He will judge all flesh; He will give the ungodly to the sword.\" [...] For six thousand years the great controversy has been going on [...] Now all have made their decision; the ungodly have fully united with Satan in his war against God. The time has come for God to vindicate the authority of His law that has been trampled underfoot. Now the lawsuit no longer concerns only Satan, but also humanity.«
