Adventistische Schriften über: "Difference between tithes and offerings"

Answer

The tithe is the holy portion of income reserved by God for Himself – specifically one‑tenth – which God claims as His property. It is, like the Sabbath, especially sanctified and intended to support the work of the gospel. Offerings, on the other hand, are voluntary additional contributions, the amount of which is left to personal will and ability – they are an expression of gratitude and love beyond the tithe.

The tithe is God's holy claim

»The tithe is holy, reserved by God for Himself. It should be brought into His treasury to support the gospel workers in their work. For a long time the Lord was deprived because there are those who do not recognize that the tithe is God's reserved portion.«

Voluntary offerings go beyond the tithe

»Voluntary sacrifices and the tithe constitute the income of the gospel. Of the resources entrusted to people, God claims a certain portion – a tithe; but He allows everyone to freely decide how much the tithe is and whether they want to give more than that. They should give as they intend in their hearts.«

The relationship between the tithe and the remaining nine tenths

»The tithe should be consecrated to God. Its requirements take precedence. We do not do His will if we devote to Him what remains after all our wishes have been fulfilled. Before a portion of our income is consumed, we should set aside the portion and present it to Him that He claims as His. When this is done, the remainder is sanctified and blessed for our own use.«

Offerings are based on ability and heart attitude

»In the biblical system of tithes and offerings, the amounts paid by different persons will naturally vary greatly, as they are measured according to income. For the poor, the tithe will be a comparatively small sum, and his offerings will be according to his ability. But it is not the size of the offering that makes the sacrifice acceptable to God; it is the intention of the heart, the spirit of gratitude and love that it expresses.«

Both – tithes and offerings – are important

»God does not only require the tithe, but says we should come to Him with tithes and offerings. Some will say this is one of the strict laws that bound the Hebrews: But it was not a burden for the willing heart that God loved.«
