Movement through the air before the Fall
»The serpent was a beautiful creature with wings, and while it flew through the air, its appearance was radiant and resembled polished gold. It did not crawl on the ground, but moved through the air from place to place and ate fruit like a human.«
The curse and transformation into a crawling creature
»The Lord then pronounced judgment on the serpent: “Because you have done this, you are cursed before all livestock and all the animals of the field. On your belly you shall crawl and eat dust all your life.” Since it had served as Satan’s instrument, the serpent was to partake in the scourges of the divine judgment. From the most beautiful and admired creature of the field, it would become the most crawling and despised of all, feared and hated by man and beast.«
