The Christian character is revealed primarily in social relationships, through which believers come into contact with the world and act as witnesses for Christ. True Christians should use their social power to meet others with sympathy and love, rather than withdrawing into themselves. It is essential to firmly hold to principles and exert a transformative influence on the environment, rather than being shaped by negative influences.
The Social Influence of the Christian
Through social relationships, Christianity comes into contact with the world. Every man and woman who has tasted the love of Christ and received divine illumination in their heart are called by God to cast light upon the dark path of those who are unfamiliar with the better way. ... The social power, sanctified by the Spirit of Christ, must be used to win souls for the Savior.
God's people should not be transformed by the various influences to which they are necessarily exposed; rather, they must stand for Jesus and, through the help of His Spirit, exert a transformative power on minds that have been deformed by false habits and stained by sin.
Those who shut themselves off and are not willing to draw the blessing for others through friendly connections lose many blessings; for through mutual contact the minds are refined and polished; through social interaction acquaintances are made and friendships forged, resulting in a unity of heart and an atmosphere of love that is pleasing in the eyes of Heaven.
Especially those who have tasted the love of Christ should develop their social strengths, for in this way they can win souls for the Savior. Christ should not be hidden in their hearts, locked away like a coveted treasure ... Students should be taught Christlikeness, to show kind interest and a social disposition toward those in greatest need, even if they are not their self‑chosen companions.
When the choice falls on companions who fear the Lord, the influence will lead to truth, duty, and holiness. A truly Christian life is a power for good. On the other hand, those who associate with men and women of questionable morality, of poor principles and practices, will soon walk the same path.
It is the essence of Christianity to create happy families and a happy society. Discord, selfishness, and strife are cast aside by every man and woman who possesses the true spirit of Christ.
