Children can and should keep the Sabbath holy, learning from the example and instruction of their parents to regard it as the holiest day of the week. For this to succeed, parents must make the Sabbath a joy and an interesting experience, for example through the study of nature as God's creation. It is the parents' responsibility to guide their children so that they do not violate the Sabbath, since the children's transgression is also considered a failure on the part of the parents.
Instruction through Teaching and Example
I counsel you, my brothers and sisters: “Remember the Sabbath day, that you may keep it holy.” If you want your children to keep the Sabbath according to the command, you must teach them both through instruction and by example. ... The impressions formed in early life will manifest in later years.
Make the Sabbath a Joy
The Sabbath should be made so interesting for our families that its weekly return is welcomed with joy. Parents cannot elevate and honor the Sabbath in a better way than by devising means to give their families proper instruction and to interest them in spiritual matters... Parents, make the Sabbath a delight, so that your children look forward to it and welcome it in their hearts.
Nature Observations as Sabbath Activity
In children's minds, the mere thought of the Sabbath should be associated with the beauty of natural things. Happy is the family that can go to a place of worship on the Sabbath, as Jesus and his disciples went to the synagogue—over the fields, along the lake shore, or through the groves.
Parental Responsibility for Children's Actions
Pay particular attention to your children on the Sabbath. Do not let them violate it, for you could just as easily violate it yourself as you allow your children to do. If you permit your children to play on the Sabbath, God will regard you as transgressors of the command.
