Adventistische Schriften über: "Biblical people who were mute, and why they were mute"
Answer
A well‑known biblical example of a person who became mute is the priest Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. He lost his speech as a consequence of his unbelief after the angel Gabriel announced to him that his aged wife would bear a son. His muteness persisted until the child was born and he confirmed the promised name “John” in writing.
Zechariah’s muteness because of his unbelief
»\"And Zechariah said to the angel: How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years. And the angel answered and said to him: I am Gabriel, who stands before God; and I have been sent to speak to you and to announce this good news to you. And behold, you will be mute and will not be able to speak until the day this happens, because you have not believed my words, which are to be fulfilled in their time. And the people waited for Zechariah and wondered that he lingered so long in the temple. And when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple; for he gestured to them and remained mute.\" Also Zechariah’s muteness did not end until the child was born and was to be circumcised. The question concerning the naming of the child was brought to him: \"And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote: John is his name. And they all marveled. And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke and praised God.\«
