Adventistische Schriften über: "Be guided by the Spirit or the Law?"

Answer

The Holy Spirit and the Word of God work inseparably together, because the Spirit was given to illuminate and apply the Holy Scripture, rather than replace it. The law and the word serve as the standard by which every spiritual experience must be tested, for guidance by the Spirit will never be in conflict with the Bible. Whoever claims to be led solely by impressions and neglects the written Word runs the risk of falling into deception.

The Harmony between Spirit and Word

»Yet the fact that God has revealed His will to humanity through His Word has not made the continual presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit unnecessary. On the contrary, the Spirit was promised by our Savior to unlock the Word for His servants, to illuminate its teachings and to apply them. And since it was the Spirit of God who inspired the Bible, it is impossible for the teaching of the Spirit ever to be in conflict with that of the Word.«

»The Spirit was not given – and can never be bestowed – to replace the Bible; for the Holy Scripture expressly states that the Word of God is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested. The apostle John says, “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” And Isaiah declares, “Turn to the law and the testimony! If they do not speak according to this Word, it is because there is no light in them.”«

»Great disgrace has been cast upon the work of the Holy Spirit by the errors of a class that, invoking its illumination, claims no further guidance from the Word of God is needed. They are led by impressions which they regard as the voice of God in the soul. But the spirit that dominates them is not the Spirit of God. This following of impressions while neglecting the Holy Scripture can only lead to confusion, deception, and ruin.«

»If we truly strive to do God’s will, the Holy Spirit takes the precepts of His Word and makes them the principles of life, writing them on the tablets of the soul. And only those who follow the light already given can hope to receive further illumination from the Spirit. This is clearly laid out in the words of Christ: “If anyone wishes to do His will, he will discern whether this teaching is from God.”«

»The apostle Paul clearly presents the relationship between faith and law under the new covenant. He says, “Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” “Do we then do away with the law by faith? Far from it! Rather we affirm the law.” … “so that the righteousness the law requires would be fulfilled in us, we do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”«

»The Word of God as a whole is a perfect chain, where each part interlocks with and explains the other. True seekers of truth cannot err; for not only is the Word of God clear and simple in its presentation of the way to life, but the Holy Spirit is given as a guide to understand the way to life revealed therein.«

Why I built EGW Vision

Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.

EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.

My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
