Ellen Gould White
What does Ellen White write about...
Ellen Gould White über: "According to John 3:16, do I only have to believe in Jesus and I am saved??"
Answer
Although faith in Jesus Christ is the fundamental condition for eternal life, true saving faith is defined as more than mere intellectual assent. According to the writings of Ellen G. White, genuine faith is a living connection to God that inevitably expresses itself in love and obedience to His law. Whoever claims to believe but knowingly sins or disregards the divine will does not possess saving faith, because obedience is the natural fruit of a genuine relationship with Christ.
True Saving Faith versus Mere Assent
»The faith in Christ that saves the soul is not what many portray it to be. "Believe, believe," is their cry; "just believe in Christ, and you will be saved. That's all you have to do." While true faith for salvation wholly trusts in Christ, it will lead to perfect conformity with God's law. Faith is manifested through works. And the apostle John declares: "Whoever says, I know Him, and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.«
Two Dangerous Misconceptions about Works and Faith
»There are two misconceptions that the children of God must especially guard against... The opposite and no less dangerous misconception is that faith in Christ releases a person from keeping God's law; that our works have nothing to do with our salvation, because we become partakers of Christ's grace solely through faith. But note here that obedience is not merely external compliance, but the service of love... Obedience—the service and fidelity of love—is the true sign of discipleship. Therefore Scripture says: "This is love for God, that we keep His commandments.«
Faith as a Personal Relationship and Covenant
»Simply believing in Christ as the Savior of the world can never bring healing to the soul. The faith that leads to salvation is not a mere assent to the truth of the gospel. True faith is the one that accepts Christ as a personal Savior... Many regard faith as an opinion. Saving faith is a transaction through which those who receive Christ enter into a covenant relationship with God. A living faith means an increase in power, a confident trust, through which the soul, by Christ's grace, becomes a victorious force.«
The Completion of Faith through Obedience
»For a person to be justified by faith, the faith must reach a point where it governs the inclinations and impulses of the heart; and it is through obedience that the faith itself is made perfect... Faith is the condition under which God has promised to grant forgiveness to sinners; not because there is a virtue in faith by which one earns salvation, but because faith can appropriate the merits of Christ, the remedy prepared for sin.«
Simplicity of Saving Faith
»Saving faith is simplicity itself... Look upon the exalted Savior, and however grave your sins may be, believe that He will save you. All remedies and medicines of the world would have failed to heal even a single soul bitten by the poisonous serpent; but God had provided a remedy that could not fail. "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.«
