Ellen Gould White über: "1 Samuel 1 Explained"
Answer
1 Samuel 1 describes the story of Hannah, a god-fearing woman whose longing for a child was tested by the lack of faith of her husband Elkanah and the humiliations of her rival Peninnah. In her deep distress she turned to God in prayer, made a vow, and eventually received the son Samuel, whom she called “asked of God.” Faithful to her promise, she dedicated the child, after weaning, to service in the sanctuary under the guidance of Eli.
Hannah’s Trial and Her Prayer at Shiloh
»Hannah’s hope seemed thwarted and life a burdensome weight; yet she faced the trial with patient gentleness. ... The burden she could share with no earthly friend she cast upon God. Earnestly she pleaded that He would remove her disgrace and grant her the precious gift of a son, to raise him for Him. And she made a solemn vow that she would consecrate her child to God if her request were granted.«
The Encounter with Eli and the Birth of Samuel
»Startled and hurt, Hannah answered gently: “No, my lord, I am a woman with a heavy heart. I have not drunk wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord.” ... The high priest was deeply moved ... Instead of rebuke he pronounced a blessing: “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you your request which you have asked of Him.” Hannah received the gift ... She named him Samuel – “asked of God.”«
The Fulfillment of the Vow
»As soon as the little one was old enough to be separated from his mother, she fulfilled her vow. He was her only son, the special gift of heaven; but she had received him as a treasure consecrated to God and did not wish to withhold from the Giver what was His own. ... She said: “For this child I prayed; and the Lord has granted my request which I asked of Him. Therefore I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives, he shall be lent to the Lord.”«
Hannah’s Prophetic Hymn
»Hannah’s words were prophetic, both concerning David, who was to reign as king over Israel, and the Messiah, the Anointed of the Lord. The song first refers to the boasting of a brazen and quarrelsome woman and then points to the destruction of God’s enemies and the final triumph of His redeemed people. ... Each year she fashioned with her own hands a ministerial garment for him [Samuel] ... Every fiber of the little garment had been woven with a prayer.«
The Importance of Parental Education
»Hannah dedicated Samuel to the Lord; and it is said of him: “Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words [the words of the Lord through Samuel] fall to the earth.” In the case of this prophet and judge in Israel, the possibilities are shown that are open to a child whose parents cooperate with God and fulfill their assigned task. Children are a heritage from the Lord and should be raised for His service.«
